HOW TO BUILD A CAPSULE WARDROBE
You don't need 50 pieces to get dressed well every morning. You need 10 good ones. A capsule wardrobe strips away the noise and leaves you with pieces that actually work together.
WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile, high-quality pieces that you genuinely love wearing. The idea started in the 1970s with London boutique owner Susie Faux, but it's more relevant now than ever. Fast fashion has given us too many options and not enough good ones.
The goal is simple: fewer pieces, more outfits. Every item should pair with at least three others in your closet.
The 10 essential pieces
Tucked into trousers for work, open over a tank for the weekend, knotted at the waist with jeans. A slightly oversized cut in quality cotton outlasts any trend.
Shop the shirtNot too wide, not too slim. Mid-rise in black or navy, in structured twill or light wool. Office, dinner, and everything between.
Shop the trousersSkip the corporate grey. Plum, khaki, or textured ecru does the same job but actually says something. Throw it over a t-shirt and jeans and you look put together without trying.
Shop the jacketThe ones you reach for every Saturday. Straight or slim, dark wash, no distressing. They dress up better than you'd think with the right top and shoes.
Shop the jeansNot your couch sweater. A fitted knit in ecru, camel, or grey that works under a blazer or on its own. Ribbed or textured fabrics add interest without being loud.
Shop the knitWork meeting at 10am, drinks at 8pm. Midi length, clean lines, a fabric that doesn't wrinkle in your bag. Solid colour only. Prints limit your pairing options.
Shop the dressFor the 8 months of the year when it's not freezing but you still need a layer. A classic trench in beige or khaki. Or suede if that fits your style better.
Shop the trenchNot the three-pack from the supermarket. Heavy cotton, a good neckline, properly fitting on the shoulders. White or black. You'll wear it 100 times.
Shop the t-shirtYour weekend uniform. Linen, light twill, or soft denim. Sneakers or sandals. The comfort of joggers, the look of actual trousers.
Shop the pantsStructured enough for work, relaxed enough for the weekend. Medium size, neutral colour, crossbody or shoulder strap. The bag you grab without thinking.
Shop the bag"The best capsule wardrobe isn't the most expensive one. It's the one you actually wear, every piece, every week."
WHERE TO INVEST
HOW TO MAKE THEM WORK TOGETHER
Stick to a colour palette. Three neutrals: black, white, beige or grey, plus one or two accents. If every piece shares this palette, everything mixes with everything. Ten pieces, done right, give you 30+ distinct outfits.
Start with 10. See how it feels. You probably won't go back.
